I liked the subject at school, at university and then when I did a PhD in the subject. So enjoyment! I can’t think of anything more satisfying than trying to solve a problem and then managing to.
To answer you in one word “perseverance”. In spite of all the hurdles and failures and frustration, I never gave up. So i would say perseverance is the key. Formally i have my bachelors, masters and phd in chemistry and i have a few years of postdoctoral research experience as well.
I enjoyed Chemistry as a subject at school, and so was keen to study it further at University. After completing my degree (Master in Chemistry), I applied for a PhD in an area of Chemistry which really interested me.
I loved chemistry so much at school, that I knew I wanted to study it at university. After studying my Masters degree in chemistry, I knew I wanted to study chemistry for longer and more in depth, so I chose to do a PhD. I’m still doing this at the moment, who knows where I will end up next?!
As a part of my degree in Chemistry, I worked for a year in a pharmaceutical company. I really enjoyed working there, and found doing chemistry for a job gave me a new perspective on the subject. This is when I decided I wanted to do a PhD. I was attracted to doing my PhD in industry as it meant I would get a lot of experience in the pharmaceutical industry as well as a PhD. As for the project I ended up doing – I knew I wanted to do something in sustainable chemistry, and I have always had an interest in biology, so when this project on enzymes came along in Industry it seemed perfect!
I think it is the fact that science can explain so many things that happen in the world around us. There is always a scientific explanation for everything and the need to find out what that explanation is, is what drives most scientists.
