Good question – a phd is a degree in learning how to do research (ie., do new experiments that have never been done before). It takes 3-5 years depending where you are in the world. At the end of it you have to write your findings into a book and then you have an oral (spoken) exam with some professors. If you want more information yet me know!

Yup, like Alan said. You need a bachelors or masters degree before you can start doing a PhD.

There is an online comic about the life of a PhD student, I find it funny and often accurate 🙂

PhD – literally stands of ‘Doctor of Philosophy’ but this is just a name from the Greek meaning of philosophy (‘lover of wisdom’) – it doesnt mean that we are all studying philosophy! Like the others said, it’s extra training ontop of a degree and masters that trains you how do research. And as a bonus when you have a PhD you can put ‘Dr’ in front of your name 🙂

It is hard work, enjoyable, amazing, and there seems to be a lot of cake involved! 🙂
