Ok I’ll answer this but don’t tell my friends! I earn about £30,000 per year. I would say that it is about fair, although a little more money wouldn’t hurt!

PhD students get somewhere between £13,000 and £18,000 a year, if they get funded. If you take into account all the hours the average PhD student does (late nights and weekends are normal) it works out as less than minimum wage!
The thing is this isn’t actually a proper job as we are still studying, the money is there to help us live during our studies rather than be a proper wage. I get along fine with what I have.

Like Sarah, I’m a PhD student too so get around £17 000 each year. As she said – per hour it’s probably below minimum wage but it’s enough to live on and even save up a bit if you’re thrifty 🙂

I guess i am paid enough to run a family. As a PhD student you get £19,000, as a postdoc you get typically £30,000 and if you become a scientist, you get around £40,000 per annum. The fun part of this job is you get paid for doing something you like a lot. On top of it I had been (all paid trip) to Germany, Netherlands, Japan, Singapore and many more countries. Trust me, money alone cannot bring happiness, so i would strongly suggest to pursue a career which you like the most and you are passionate about it.

I am a PhD student, so get paid about the same amount as Sarah and Jo. I think it is an OK wage, as it is enough to live off. I do tend to work long hours as a PhD student though, so whether it is a fair wage is debatable. Of course, a little more money would always be great!
