I was in Year 8 when I decided to become a scientist, so 12 or 13? Quite young really. But I remember loving Chemistry lessons as soon as I started secondary school. Then, in one lesson in year 8, we watched a video about the discovery of buckminsterfullerene (a rare form of carbon), which really got me excited about the subject and want to become a scientist.
Honestly, i started enjoying science during my bachelor’s degree when i was like 19-20y old. However i wish i had started this love a bit earlier, would have enjoyed a lot. Better late than never.
Although I have always been interested in science, I wanted to be a doctor until I was about 16. I did a few work experience placements in different areas of medicine, including a week in a molecular biology lab. I found that I like the research side of things more and from that decided that I’d like to study science, and so decided to study chemistry when I was about 17. It wasnt until the 3rd year of my degree though that I decided I liked it so much that I wanted to be a scientist when I graduated!
